Fall’s Flavorful Announcement

Have you seen them. Dear Readers? Stores and communities are alive with their globular shape and harvest-moon color!  It’s a vast sea of the color orange!

As the dropping of the New Year’s Eve Ball in Times Square is as sure-as-shooting going to happen at the end of the calendar year, pumpkins of all sizes punch the time clock of autumn and appear in full force annually by the first date of the tenth month.

We foodies excitedly await an October announcement, “Pumpkin Spice Lattes are here!”

Ohhh, the anticipation of savoring those fall-flavored pumpkiny spices blended with milk and freshly brewed espresso reaches its pinnacle in liquid splendor in the fall!

Comforting Flavors

The beverage, itself, is not glamorous by any means. However, the comfort associated with consuming that flavor combination has been stored in the brain. Yes, that’s right! Here is the reason why, Dear Readers.

According to the article at http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/13/health/pumpkin-spice-ingredients-science-explainer/index.html, by combining the recognizable pumpkin spice flavor with sugar, you train your brain and body to remember how delicious the combination is—and as soon as you smell or even imagine pumpkin spice, your body will have an anticipatory response and crave it.

“Even without seasonal marketing, the brain has a special response to pumpkin spice when the flavor is mixed with sugar, according to Catherine Franssen, assistant professor of psychology and director of the neurostudies minor at Longwood University in Virginia.

Ms. Franssen states that pumpkin spice latte is actually, scientifically, kind of addictive.

How did all of this pumpkin-spice brain training begin, Dear Readers? Interestingly, it began when spiced pumpkin candles grew in popularity. That common seasonal scent fanned the flame of the food market a couple of decades ago. The rest is pure autumnal bliss tastebud history!

Memory Lane

Reminisce with me, Dear Readers. What thoughts come to mind from your childhood if I mention pumpkin pie, Grandma’s house, holiday gatherings, family and friends, smiles and laughter? Does that warm, I-am-loved feeling envelope you? It does Miss NiNi! It’s no wonder that the heralding of “Pumpkin Spice Lattes are here!” stirs up happiness within our souls!

If you, too, have a seasonal love affair with a Pumpkin Spice Latte, you are not alone, Dear Readers. Each of us has our favorite coffee retreat at which we can purchase the comforting beverage.

Where is Miss NiNi’s favorite coffee refuge? Why, it’s Miss NiNi’s Desserterie, Dear Readers! And not only do we serve Pumpkin Spice Lattes made with locally roasted Zanzibar’s beans, but we take pumpkin spice to new flavor heights in our Pumpkin Praline Cheesecake, Chunky Chocolate Pumpkin Bread, Pumpkin Cookies with Browned Butter Frosting, Pumpkin Cake Truffles, and three-layer Pumpkin Cake with Cranberry Cream Cheese Filling and Cinnamon Buttercream Frosting. Can it get any more comforting than that? I think not!

The spices associated with pumpkin and autumn are as heartwarming as pine and peppermint are to Christmas.

Perhaps, the late Charles M. Schultz summed up the epitome of this season quite well when he coined the phrase, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Miss NiNi would take that popular verbosity a bit further and state, “It’s the Great Pumpkin Spice Latte, Dear Readers.”

Now, why not find your favorite coffee shop and enjoy one of the comforts of the season.
